|
In Germany, based on an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the “Competence Network IBD” was established in 1999 to concentrate and further develop the scientific initiatives of various universities in the field of research in inflammatory bowel diseases.
In addition to this horizontal networking, the “Competence Network IBD” also managed to implement and vitalize vertical networking between medical practitioners in clinics and practices.
Apart from these research initiatives, other important tasks included the implementation of advanced IBD courses for doctors as well as the establishment of an IBD-specific qualification for medical assistants. Moreover, the “Competence Network IBD” successfully contributed to the development of guidelines on IBD in Germany.
Currently, the “Competence Network IBD” is focussing on public relations and, additionally, a study platform, the “German IBD Study Group (GISG)”, was installed this year.

The Hungarian Society of Gastroenterology (MGT) is an umbrella organization comprising different groups of specialists, fellows-in-training, endoscopy assistants and nurses with an interest in disease of the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, intestine, bowel, paediatrics, surgery, GI oncology, GI imaging, and endoscopy.
The Hungarian IBD Study Group is a research group founded in 2002. It is part of the Hungarian Society of Gastroenterology Colon Section. Their primary aim is to initiate and perform multicenter clinical and translational studies with special interest to the prediction of disease outcomes by using clinical and biomarkers (including clinical serologic, genetic and faecal markers).

NGF is the Norwegian Gastroenterological Association founded in 1965. Today NGF has 345 members of which 195 are specialists in Gastroenterology.

The first professional organization of Polish gastroenterologists was the Gastroenterology Section of the Warsaw Medical Association established in 1909.
In 1935 Polish delegates of the Gastroenterology Section took part in the founding congress of the World Gastroenterology Organization. PSG was re-established in 1977 and now consists of 11 regional branches. National congresses of the Society are held every 2 years. The following sections of PSG have been registered: endoscopic, pancreatic, Helicobacter pylori, motility, molecular biology and the newest, intestinal section, with more than 50 members since 2006. In 2008 Poland joined the ECCO Family.

RCCC, founded in 2009, is a scientific organisation affiliated to ECCO and the Romanian Society of Gastroenterology (SRGH).
RCCC currently comprises over 200 members interested in basic research, diagnosis and therapy of inflammatory bowel disease. Our main goals are the development of a national IBD registry, of locally adapted IBD guidelines and of a National IBD programme sustaining the free access to specific diagnostic modalities and therapy. BSG
|
BSG – British Society of Gastroenterology
|
|
BSG is the major professional society for gastroenterologists in the UK.
It is divided into sections with specific interests, and the IBD section has over 800 members, making it one of the largest in the society. The IBD section organises the IBD symposia at the annual meeting, and makes the case for the society over IBD related issues with government and other organisations.
In recent years this has meant significant interaction with NICE (the government body on cost-effectiveness of drugs) with regard to biological therapy in IBD, and has had significant influence in trying to make biologic therapy more available. The IBD section is also responsible for the BSG IBD guidelines, and has recently set up the IBD Clinical Studies group.
It is working with a number of other organisations to promote better treatment of IBD patients and is currently involved in connection with others in trying to establish and national IBD register, disseminating the results of the national IBD audit and piloting a new self-assessment tool for IBD centres based around the national standards in IBD. It works closely with the patient group Crohn's and Colitis UK in all these fields.
