N-ECCO Network Meeting
Since 2007, the ECCO IBD Nurses (N-ECCO) organise an annual Network Meeting aimed at European nurses working in the field of IBD (specialist nurses, practitioners, and study/research nurses) which takes place prior to the main ECCO Congress. The N-ECCO Meeting provides educational and networking opportunities and covers all aspects of IBD with a mix of presentations from nursing, medical, surgical and paediatric specialties and has been well attended with attendance increasing year on year.
The meeting has attracted more than 220 interested IBD nurses in Barcelona in 2012. The next meeting will be held in Vienna in 2013.

N-ECCO School
At the ECCO Congress in Prague, 2010, the N-ECCO Committee has introduced a new educational activity tailored for IBD nurses. With this new initiative ECCO intends to give young nurses, who might still be in training and have an interest in IBD, the possibility to attend an IBD focused course. The N-ECCO School takes place as a one-day course and consists of lectures from medical & nursing colleagues, as well as workshops. The aim of this programme is to ultimately improve nurse education throughout Europe.
The 3rd N-ECCO School has successfully been held in Barcelona in 2012. Information about application and registration for the 4th School will be available soon on the ECCO Vienna Congress website.

Post N-ECCO Events
Look out for post N-ECCO events! These meetings have taken place in the past year run by N-ECCO national representatives in the Netherlands and Spain. These should be set up with the knowledge of ECCO to provide an overview of the learning from ECCO and N-ECCO of that year. Post N-ECCO also serves as a means of spreading the word of ECCO and N-ECCO!
N-ECCO Consensus statements
This year, N-ECCO plans to develop consensus statements for the role of the nurse caring for patients with IBD. ECCO has produced several consensus statements in the management of IBD and the management of specific situations, such as opportunist infections. Nurses in Europe work at many levels, coming into contact with patients in various settings, within ward, endoscopy and outpatient clinics. The specialist nursing role is emerging, but remains less common in a number of European countries. Nurses also report differing levels of autonomy regarding the role they play in the care of IBD patients.
N-ECCO aims to define current roles undertaken by nurses in Europe in relation to IBD and to do this requested that all delegates attending the N-ECCO school and meeting, complete a survey. The results will provide an understanding of the current position and roles of nurses the care of patients with IBD. Findings from the survey will help to shape the consensus document, and all nurses who are ECCO members will be given the opportunity to become involved in the project.
N-ECCO Travel Award
This year for the first time, any nurse who is a member of ECCO can apply for a travel grant (deadline for applications is 1 October 2012) to visit another European centre to observe nursing care. Observational leaning is essential when nurses develop within a role and this is a superb opportunity to gain financial support to do so.
More information can be found here and details about the application process are availble in the N-ECCO Travel Award FactSheet.
